Tawheed — the single oneness of Allah — Tawheed is not merely a belief — it is the divine foundation upon which all of Islam rests.. It is the foundation of all Islamic cosmology, the foundation of faith (Iman), and the foundation of the first pillar of the Muslim creed (Aqidah). Unless one has good understanding and acceptance of Tawheed, all worship becomes futile and aimless.
At Bareq Ul Quran, our Aqidah course presents you with a well-structured, spiritually fulfilling, and intellectually sound journey into Tawheed, answering not only what it is, but also why it is the very essence of Islamic faith.
Knowing Tawheed: Defining the Oneness of Allah
Tawheed (توحيد) is the Arabic root “wahhada” which signifies “to unify” or “to declare as one.” In Islamic theology, it is to affirm the oneness of Allah in all respects of His essence — His Lordship, His Names and Attributes, and His exclusive right to be worshipped.
Tawheed is divided into three fundamental categories:
- Tawheed ar-Ruboobiyyah (Oneness of Lordship)
Keeping in view Allah as the only Creator, Sustainer, Owner, and Controller of everything.
- Tawheed al-Asma’ wa Sifaat (Oneness of Names and Attributes)
Affirming the unique Names and Attributes of Allah mentioned in the Quran and Sunnah without alteration, negation, questioning ‘how’, or comparison to creation.
- Tawheed al-Uloohiyyah (Oneness of Worship)
Dedicating all acts of worship solely to Allah — like prayer, supplication, fasting, dependence, love, and fear — and denying any kind of shirk (partnership with Him).
Comprehending these categories sheds light on our daily worship and provides profound insight into what it means to be a servant of Allah (‘Abdullah).
Why Tawheed is the Heart of Islam
1. It Was the Call of All Prophets
All prophets from Adam up until Muhammad ﷺ were sent with one core task:
“Worship Allah; you have no deity other than Him.” — Surah Al-A’raf 7:59
From Nuh عليه السلام up to Ibrahim عليه السلام up to Musa عليه السلام and ‘Isa عليه السلام, the call of Tawheed was the call to all nations.
2. Tawheed Is the First Obligation of Every Human Being
Prior to prayer, fasting, or any practice — Islam’s very first requirement is to believe in Allah’s oneness. Without it, no form of worship is accepted.
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
“Let the first thing you invite them to be the Tawheed of Allah.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari)
3. Tawheed Is the Ultimate Purpose of Creation
“And I did not create the jinn and mankind except to worship Me.”
— Surah Adh-Dhariyat 51:56
Worship (Ibadah) is only valid when it’s based on pure Tawheed. That is, every prayer, every charity, every fast — has to be sincerely for Allah alone.
4. Tawheed Is the Key to Paradise
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Whoever dies knowing that there is no god but Allah shall enter Paradise.”
(Sahih Muslim)
This means the tremendous weight of Tawheed on Judgment Day — greater than mountains of sin, if sincere.
Shirk: The opposite of Tawheed
To understand the beauty and importance of Tawheed, we must also be aware of what its opposite is: shirk (polytheism).
Shirk Includes:
- Calling others besides Allah
- Believing others have a share in Allah’s knowledge, power, or control
- Giving worship to saints, idols, or graves
- Seeking protection, blessings, or intercession through any being other than Allah
Allah warns in the Quran:
“Indeed, Allah does not forgive association with Him, but He forgives what is less than that for whom He wills.”
— Surah An-Nisa 4:48
This confirms that shirk is the worst sin — an outright contradiction to the very foundation of Islam.
Tawheed in Daily Life: Applying the Belief
Tawheed transcends mere theoretical understanding; it ought to influence our daily lives, thoughts, and actions.
When You Truly Believe in Tawheed:
- You call upon only Allah with absolute trust.
- You no longer fear others more than Allah.
- You don’t gain approval by being rebellious.
- You become patient and content, knowing Allah is the Provider.
- You only depend on Allah during difficulty and prosperity.
The more one grasps the concept of Tawheed, the freer one feels from fear, anxiety, and reliance on others.
